چکیده
Absrract This paper describes research in tw'o areas: heterogeneous catalysis and molecular self-asiembly. The work in heterogeneous catalysis used the platinum-catalyzed hydrogenation of diolefin(dialkyl)platinum(ll) complexes to generate platinum surface alkyls of known structure. The structure and rcactrvity of these surface alkyls were inferred from characteristic processes occurring on the surface. The incorporation of deuterium from isotopically labelled protic soivents (e.g. EIOD) w'as puticularly useful mechanistically. The technique of self-assembly rvas used to fonn organic monolayers by coordination of a ligand to a metal or me[al oxide surface. In addition to the chernisorption of alkyl thiols on gold (as alkyl thiolates, RS-Au+), a nuntber of othcr svste nrs n'ere demonstrated to gi.,'o ordered organic sutface species.
